Sketches from Rome: Piazza Navona

Although I have been drawing, I have limited access to my scanner at this point, so I have been unable to scan in new work. I realized, in all my excitement to get out a daily Bow Tie Guy, that I forgot about my sketches from my last trip to Italy and Greece.

Here is my sketch from Piazza Navona. I love drawing in Europe. I love taking my students on these trips and seeing their drawing skills improve.

Although I continually see room for improvement in my drawing skills, I also recognize improvement. I strongly believe it is the quantity of drawing that helps you improve.

Sketches from Europe – Monterosso Part II

When I was in Europe this past February, I had some extra time in Moterosso, on of the Cinque Terre. I was able to do a second sketch. I love how the buildings are not standing straight. It is a nightmare for those that love linear perspective. I love to exaggerate the angles, so I am not as worried about it.

I hope that I will be able to eventually spend a few days in the Cinque Terre to do even more sketches. It is truly a beautiful location.

Sketches From Europe-Vernazza

We only had a brief moment to enjoy the beauty of the smallest of the village in the Cinque Terra this year. I am grateful it was enough time to get one sketch in.

Sketches From Europe-Venice

I believe I have said this before, but I love Venice. I love the bridges. I love the buildings tilting every which way. I love the plethora of antennas. I love the color, the water, the feel of the city. It is simply magical. This is the first of many sketches from my latest trip to Italy.

I sketch in a 7 x 11 Canson sketchbook. I try to go as fast as I can so that I can draw as much as I can in every location I visit. when I get home, I ad the color electronically using Adobe Photoshop. I make sure to do a minimal amount of editing to the drawing so as to keep true to what I saw.

Over the next few weeks I will be posting work from my recent trip to Europe. These are fast drawing while sitting on the bus traveling from Pisa to the Cinque Terre in Italy.

People Watching

This is a collections of quick sketches of people while on My trip to Italy and Greece this last February. I love drawing people and trying to capture them unaware. There is something so telling about who they are and what they are thinking. I also think this is one of the best exercises an illustrator or animator can do to get an understanding of how to draw the figure and bring it to life.

A view of Orvieto

I had posted the original drawing earlier on my Facebook page while I was in Europe. Here I have added color. I have found a great love for small Italian villages. They are so inspiring, picturesque, and beautiful. Orvieto is in the Province of Terni, Southwestern Umbria. It is another one of my top 10 favorite places to visit.

Drawing from Venice

It has been some time since I last posted.

In April I was able to take a trip to Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, and Southern France. It was a wonderful experience. In addition to seeing some incredible art work, I made sure to take some time to draw what I saw. Here is one of the drawings I did while in Venice.
