Sketching at Diagon Alley

As part of my family's visit to Orlando, Florida I took an opportunity to sketch a bit in Diagon Alley at Universal Orlando. I could have spent a lot more time there. I loved all the skiwampus buildings. It was a visual smorgasbord!

Seeing your work

It is always a mixed bag of emotions when you see your work in public. For me it is humbling, a little embarrassing, and exciting. I see all the mistakes and all the problems, but it is there in the public to be seen in all it's awkward glory. This was taken at the Vermont Children's Theater this last weekend.

Some one at the theater also took my logo design and made a no smoking sign. I think whoever did it did a wonderful job keeping the same look and feel.

Bow Tie Guy of the Day: Tarasque

Tarasque

A tarasque is a creature that hails from Southern France. It is described as being dragon like, with a lion's head, six short legs and a turtle shell.  In legend it destroyed the landscape. The king attacked it with all he could but it had no effect on the beast. Finally Saint Martha tamed the creature with hymns and prayers. She brought it to the town where they attacked the beast and killed it because it would not fight back.

Bow Tie Guy of the Day: Chinese Dragon IF Dragon

This was a request from a student of mine and a fried requested a bearded dragon. This weeks word on Illustration Friday is Dragon.

The dragon in China is a symbol of power, strength and good luck if one is worthy of it. They traditionally have powers of water. This includes rainfall storms and floods.

The Rabbit-Dragon (ˈrabit-ˈdragən)

This rare small reptilian rabbit can be found scurrying through the dense forests of Northern Europe, New England, and North Eastern Canada. It glides more than it flies and likes to live a solitary life.

This is the last of my rabbit series for a while. I want to move on to endangered species.

Weekly Bow Tie Guy: Chimera

Chimera (kīˈmi(ə)re)

I have had this on my list of Bow Tie Guys for some time. It is a complex creature and it took a while for me to get my head wrapped around how to draw it. 

The Chimera is a fire breathing creature from Greek mythology. Traditionally it had the head of a lion and goat with the goat's body and a serpent tail. In current iterations have the addition of the dragons head and dragon wings. I thought it was humorous to add the bulkiness of the lions front legs and the thinness of a goats hind end.

Trick or Treating (trik ôr trētiNG)

Included in my final post for the 31 days of Creature Bow Ties is the wolpertin, the Brain in a jar, the Blob, a dragon and a goblin. There is one more as a hidden creature for those that want to look. Technically, I could add a second mystery bow tie guy as well. I hope you enjoy the day. Now it is on to working on the illustrations for this years faculty exhibit.

Dragon (ˈdragən)

This is a quick color sketch. As I have mentioned before, I love drawing dragons. They are so majestic, and a bow tie, glasses, and sweater vest seem to fit them so well. The exciting thing is I keep coming up with different ways to do the head ornaments.
